Winter Views in the Smoky Mountains
There are a few reasons I enjoy hiking in the winter. It’s quieter, less people on the trails, and there are no bugs to bother me. But the biggest reason I enjoy hiking in the winter is I get to see views that would normally be obscured by greenery.
Carolina Beach State Park
I’m a big advocate for visiting parks off season, and Carolina Beach State Park is a perfect example of why. It’s full of evergreen trees that give the park a lush look all year round, there are carnivorous plants that are active until late November, and some of the trails terminate on the banks of the Cape Fear river.
Wildflowers at Stevens Creek Nature Preserve
After last week’s record breaking heat, I had assumed that every flower in the south had withered and died, Against all odds, I found this field of Black-eyed Susans thriving in the shade at Stevens Creek Nature Preserve just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Enchanted Forest Trail
At the end of the 1.8 mile trail loop at Purser-Hulsey Park is a bonus half loop, the “Enchanted Forest” trail. A narrow, ribbon like trail winds through a grove of slender pines. It was so quiet you could hear the trees creak in the wind. It did feel magical.
