An interesting idea posed over at Cora Still Writes. I think there are two types of negative reviews that make me want to read a book anyways.
One type would be the “this book borrows too much from this other book/genre/author” reviews. The degree to which people criticize authors (and other creatives) for drawing inspiration from others seems increasingly arbitrary and sexist.
The second type of review are ones that deem a book too weird or strange. I always want to read those!

A writer I follow (I can’t think which one!) said she only sees reasons to give 1, 4, or 5 starred reviews. And a 1 only if you’re trying to build up a reputation as a book reviewer–but not if you’re trying to build up a community as an author.
