Walking through the mall lately, I’ve been struck by how faceless the mannequins are. There is a complete lack of facial features, many don’t even have heads!
The mannequins I spotted this past weekend at a few antique malls were quite the opposite; incredibly expressive. they all bore fashionably aloof expressions, even in some cases, without hair or clothes.
Several years back, I took a seminar on how the advertising agencies dehumanize women in adds. Aloof, strung-out, vacant, staring out from the magazine page, but not at you. I’ve always seen the headless mannequins as an extension of that. BTW, those vacant looking models have gone out of vogue. It’s much more normal to see the models staring straight at you now with an engaged expression.

A weird part of me kind of wanted to buy one just so I could dress it in a sweat suit and give it a comfortable retirement.

Some of those mannequins have SEEN things and would have some great stories to tell.
