Have you ever wanted to to spend a holiday weekend in The Big Apple and see The New York City Ballet perform the Nutcracker? This year, you can stream the next best thing.
After the pandemic cancelled all of the company’s 2020 performances of the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center, New York City Ballet partnered with Ballet Collective to stage a COVID safe version. The show was moved to the Wethersfield Estate in Hudson Valley. Twenty five dancers and event staff quarantined for a month before performances began in front of limited audiences.
Moving the production to the estate to keep it safe, and also allowed for some unique staging. The first act is set in the mansion, and the rest of the show in the gardens and under tents. The audience moves around the grounds in an immersive experience, sitting as if they are part of the party in the opening scenes, peeking though windows, and moving though courtyards and gardens. Instead of watching Clara’s journey, audience members embark on it themselves.
Now that the live shows have concluded, the experience is streaming on YouTube for anyone to enjoy until Dec. 26th.
