The Swordsman of Calais

A King’s order is a King’s command
calm your nerves and steady your hand
the job’s not done ‘till the water runs red

The queen’s eyes are wide with dread
her white cap quivers in her hand
a King’s order is a King’s command

My bare feet noiselessly tread
behind the kneeling queen, neck stretched
calm your nerves and steady your hand

My sword silently delivers the King’s demand
into a straw basket rolls the queen’s head
the job’s not done ‘till the water runs red
