When I first heard Maroon 5’s Memories a few months ago, it sounded strangely familiar. I felt like I had absolutely heard the melody before, and just couldn’t place it. When I finally gave in and Googled the song, I found that Memories had borrowed from Pachelbel’s Canon.
Even if you don’t recognize the name, this piece of music has undoubtedly been burned into your brain, as it is regularly used during weddings and as background music during the holiday season. It’s an appropriate choice too. Memories is about loss, and was written following the death of the band’s longtime manager, Jordan Feldstein. It’s a fitting tribute to pair the lyrics to a piece of music tied to so many celebrations.
Strange. I played the classical version and couldn’t place it, but both of my kids identified it by name.

I recognized the melody, but I definitely didn’t know the name offhand.

Ahhhh, that hadn’t clicked before now. Thank you! And that’s a lovely version of the classical piece (so overplayed!)–love the cello!

It drove me crazy until I looked it up! The classical version was labeled “best version,” it might live up to the type!
