Villanelle 2

I made a love potion for you to drink

It’s a lovely tea, almond sweet

Stir stir, clink clink

It’s the color of love, a vibrant pink

Made just for you, no easy feat

I made a love potion for you to drink

It should work quickly, I think

Your cheeks will flush from the heat

Stir stir, clink clink

As you sip your inhibitions will shrink

You’ll feel a tingling in your feet

I make a love potion for you to drink

You’ll shiver and vomit in my sink

You’ll twitch until your heart no longer beats

Stir stir, clink clink

The world will turn as black as ink

I’ll bury you wrapped in a white sheet

I made a love potion for you to drink

Stir stir, clink clink

  1. I love the ominous repetition of ‘Stir stir, clink clink’ and I was already alerted by the words ‘almond tea’ – a favourite brew of poisoners. It reminded me of the Jodie Foster film, The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane. I like the chill these lines give me:

‘You’ll shiver and vomit in my sink
You’ll twitch until your heart no longer beats’
    and
‘The world will turn as black as ink
I’ll bury you wrapped in a white sheet’.
