I used to write things for friends. There was this girl I had a crush on, and she had a teacher she didn’t like at school. I had a real crush on her, so almost every day I would write her a little short story where she would kill him in a different way.

And now Stephen would be expelled, arrested, and institutionalized for a psych evaluation.

You bring up a good point, I wonder how a lot of my poetry would have been interpreted had I written it in high school.

I’m with you on that. Recently, I was working with my son on a writing assignment. He couldn’t get started so I wrote three lines as an example of a possible approach. When I read it to him, he said “Well, you would fail. You have sentence fragments and you’re writing in the second person.” What we adults think of as *edgy* and *real* are exactly what middle school teachers are trying to step on.
