Four Notes From A Hat

Alma Duetscher is a stunning musician and child prodigy. Composing her first full opera at the age of the age of 10 and performing her first piano concerto at the age of 12, she seems almost too good to be true.

But as this 60 Minutes video shows, she is the real deal. Watch her compose a piece of music with four notes, pulled from a hat, in 60 seconds.

  1. Wow! That was awesome! Strangely, and I don’t say this to brag, I just knew she would start off the way she did! (I don’t know, maybe it’s a musician/pianist thing…’cause I’m certainly no where as talented as she!)

    • Thank you for reading! I don’t know anything about writing music… but it was just so impressive to me that she came up with so fast, and it seemed complete, if that makes sense.

      • Yes, if we hadn’t seen the first part, it would be easy to think she had just memorized someone else’s work. It is full-on classical music, in that it had several different shifts (my brain is failing me in what these sections are called). I like the way she ended it–basically right back to those 4 original notes.

  2. As a pianist I should have run to hide under my desk. Instead I took the same notes and did an absolutely terrible improvisation, but had fun. Prodigies are always a mixed blessing, I think. Did you notice at the beginning when she sang the C before playing it, she looked for praise? i pray this fame goes away quickly and she gets down to the business of finding her bliss in the music field without the label of prodigy hanging around her neck, But it was fun to listen to what she did — she’s really pretty creative!
